SEO local: Why and how to optimize for local searches

Submitted by frank on Wed, 09/09/2009 - 08:09
If you're a business with a bricks and mortar address, or that only has a product or service to offer to people local to you then localised SEO is essential. If your website will only be likely to profit from visitors from your state, county or town then it's a waste of time and resources to promote it for less local keywords. If you own a restaurant, for instance, you're likely to get a far better financial return from a marketing campaign that targets the keyword phrase “restaurant in yourtown” than “Chinese restaurant” or “restaurant that delivers”.

Relevant linking is what makes the difference between an efficient, PageRank enhancing link building campaign and a poor one. In fact, if you have a website and you are choosing your link partners at random/for convenience rather than relevancy then your website may not be anywhere reaching its potential search engine rankings.

So, why all the hype about blogging? What are the key benefits and how much of a difference does it make to your website's search engine rankings?

If you do any reading on Search Engine Optimization service, you're sure to encounter terms such as link-building and keyword optimisation. If you venture even further down the rabbit hole you'll see people going even further in their second-guessing of the search engines, employing terms such as “search engine algorithms” and other complex mathematical theories.

The best way to do SEO: Slowly

I see it every day. Someone is posting a message on a board for freelancers, wanting to get to the top of Google, within a week for about a hundred dollars. Needless to say, this isn't going to happen without the person they're paying doing something at best unethical and at worst illegal. SEO, when done properly, is a process that takes time and regular effort. Sudden bursts of link building activity are good, and will often affect the search engine results, but if you want your website to have long term link popularity, you are going to need a long term strategy.

Keyword research: the first step to SEO

When it comes to search engine generated traffic itself, keyword research is perhaps the single most important variable out there. As such most people assume that they've done good keyword research when they increase the volume of visitors to their site by getting higher up the Google search results for a popular keyword. They would be wrong.
